A Closer Look at Singapore's Most Loved Dishes
Despite having one of the smallest populations out of Deliveroo's markets, our Little Red Dot is a strong contender in the foodie arena, clinching the coveted title of '12th Most Ordered Dish'. The spot was claimed by Maki-San's Mega San Sushi, making it the most ordered dish on Deliveroo in Singapore in 2018.
The fully customizable Mega-San Sushi beat local delight Nasi Ayam Penyet, which came in at number 73. In fact, one customer loved the dish so much they ordered it 30 times over the year (yes, you have read this right). Order figures for 2018 also indicate that Singaporeans are becoming more health conscious, with four of the seven most ordered dishes in Singapore falling under Deliveroo's Healthy Food section.
Deliveroo's data shows that most orders for the healthy stuff came in on Mondays; think salads, noodles and wraps, while orders for burgers, pizzas, fried chicken and sugary treats tend to spike on Fridays and Saturdays. Cheat day anyone? Unsurprisingly, patriotism can be felt most strongly on National Day, with a 12% increase in orders for local dishes such as Nasi Ayam Penyet, Fish Curry and Minced Meat Noodles.
But it's not all about getting our five-a-day, Singaporeans cannot seem to shake that sweet tooth. Not only did bubble tea make it into Singapore's top ten most ordered list, a staggering 450,000 cups of bubble tea were delivered throughout 2018, enough to fill over half of Marina Bay Sands Pool (the world's largest infinity edge pool)! #TGIF starts early with the highest number of bubble tea orders coming in on Friday between 3 – 5PM.
Food Trends around the World
While globally noodles and Hawaiian poke bowls were trending this year, 2018 also saw healthy plant-based dishes grow in popularity. A firm favourite last year, pizza remained a top choice for food delivery around the world with five appearing in the top 100. Deliveroo also reports an increase in orders of more traditional takeaway cuisines, with favourites including a Doner Kebab from German Doner Kebab in Birmingham and Satay from Xian Street Food in Galway.
A closer look at Deliveroo's top 100 reveals some fun foodie ordering trends over the course of 2018.
With orders of healthy options almost tripling this year, it's no surprise dishes like The Original vegan Açaí Bowl from the UAE's The Acai Spot or Singapore's Harvest Protein & Grain Bowl from Harvest have made it into the top 100. The most frequently occurring dish in the list, featuring twelve times, from eight different countries is the incredibly instagrammable and equally nutritious Poke Bowl.
But it's not all raw fish and salads. Our classic comfort foods - burgers and burritos - fill almost a fifth of the spots on this year's Deliveroo 100, with favourites including Dublin's Boojum Burrito and Germany's Classic Burger from Tommi's Burger Joint.
It seems it's not just Singapore which has developed a sweeter tooth this year, with five times more desserts appearing in this years top 100 compared to last, including the Banana Pudding from Dubai-based Magnolia Bakery and Berlin's Happy Waffle from Waffle Brothers.
This year's top 100 also showed that people are celebrating their local favourites, in addition to the popular high street chains. Favourite national dishes include Tortilla Española from Madrid-based José Luis, Shrimp Dumplings from Dim Dim Sum in Hong Kong and Boulette Sauce Brusseleir from Ballekes in Brussels.
